Transgender

The term transgender is an umbrella term that refers to people who don't identify with the gender they were assigned with at birth

This could mean someone who identifies as a transgender man may have been referred to as a 'girl' at birth but now identifies as a man

This could also mean someone who identifies as a transgender woman may have been referred to as a 'boy' at birth but now identifies as a woman

The term transgender can also refer to someone who identifies as non-binary or genderqueer etc, as they don't identify with the gender they were assigned with at birth

It is also important to remember to ask people for their pronouns when you meet them (even if you've met before this can still be helpful just to ask again to avoid misgendering them) :)
