|Main Text=Lesbian DJ, came out in the 70's and has been through the absolute worst of it, has experienced how gay people were treated back then and survived it

Worked in the Lisbon behind the bar, and the manageress told her "You get a few puffs in here but they don't bother you."

On her first night three gay lads came in, they came up to the bar looking me up and down, in 1979. I was dressed in bright orange hot pants and a royal blue top, all in crimpolene. And the three gay boys were asking:

Giz a go of your hot pants! I was like: No get your own!

One of the three young lads had makeup on, the next had a deep cut V neck, showing off cleavage, and the third was so young and beautiful that he might have been a girl himself.

Immediately, I connected with them, automatically, we talk the same language, and I could take what they were saying.

I got them their drinks, and when I went to put the money in the till, I heard one say: "I wish I could have a go on those hot pants, pity about the 'road maps'!"

When I came back to the counter, there was only one boy there, and I asked what he meant by "Pity about the road maps."

He said "You've got varicose veins all up the back of your legs!"

The cheek of him! I was fuming but laughing my head off at the same time! He'd fled to the side of the room, and I was laughing and angry at the same time! It was the very first time I laughed about myself.

For weeks and weeks and weeks, I was aware of how gay men turned everything and made it funny.

That was my opening that brought me onto the gay scene! I tell everyone about this, it was my welcome into the gay scene.
